What are Transcription Services?

Transcription Services are services provided to transcribe dictation into a documented format.

Dictation is the spoken word into a digital dictaphone or some type of portable recording device that records a person or people speaking. Dictaphones or recording devices are used for many reasons such as recording an interview or a management meeting. The recording is then downloaded on to a computer, using software that is provided when purchasing the recording device, which is installed on to the computer. These files are normally downloaded as WMA, WAV, MP3, DCT OR AIFF (although many different files are acceptable) and then can be emailed or transferred via an internet storage service such as Drop Box to a Transcriber (otherwise known as a speed Typist). A speed typist will have the required software to open the file, and with a foot pedal and a set of headphones, will then transcribe (type) the spoken word into a documented format that meets the client’s requirements.

A single person can also produce recordings dictating all manner of things such as surveyors reports, valuation reports, letters, bill of costs, inventory reports and structural engineers reports that they require transcribing into a particular format or template. When sending audio files to a transcriber the template can be sent as an attachment on an email and instructions can be issued such as, what size font you reuqire or if you prefer double line spacing etc.

Transcription Services differs slightly from typing services as transcription refers to transcribing audio files whereas typing is a more generalised term and includes things such as copy typing from hard copy such as diaries, books or PDF's.

At Typing Services I can do it all. I offer both transcription services as well as typing services and I am very experienced at transcribing into various documents and templates. For example for bill of costs I use a macro based template and for some surveyors reports, an internet based computer programme. I can type directly onto specified letterhead and can recreate tables or diagrams if required.
