Typing up a Bill of Costs

I currently undertake work for three Costs Draftsmen and thoroughly enjoy this work.

The work consists of typing up a Bill of Costs, Schedules of Documents and CDN’s using a macro enabled bill of costs template created in Word which very cleverly adds up the bill for you. The same template can also be used to type up split bills multiplied into several parts.

Costs Draftsmen play a vital part within the legal profession because a meticulously prepared bill of costs is crucial for recovering legal fees and ensuring transparency between parties. A lot of time and effort is required on behalf of the Costs Draftsman to draft a bill as the case files they are working from can be complex and voluminous in size. To produce a clear, well-structured, and compliant bill that can significantly influence the outcome of costs recovery is a skilled task that requires attention to detail, knowledge of legal procedures, and technical precision.

Once a bill is drafted I imagine the last thing a Costs Draftsman wants to do is to type it up.

Typing up a bill of costs can be a long, laborious and repetitive task as it consists of a summary of the case and a detailed statement that outlines all legal costs incurred by a party during litigation. This includes solicitors’ fees, disbursements, and any other recoverable expenses. The schedules of documents are basically chronologies of work that a fee earner has undertaken during litigation and the time it has taken. These schedules can be up to 20 pages long detailing over a hundred hours of fee earners work. The final document to be typed is a CDN which is a note from the Costs Draftsman to bring anything to the attention of the Solicitors who the Bill is being drafted for.

That’s where I come in! A Costs Draftsman will dictate all of the above and send me the file via email. I will then undertake the task of typing it all up into the specified format and returning it to the Costs Draftsman ready to be presented for assessment.
